Although we knew tonight's show was going to be mostly covers, it actually surpassed our expectations. Chalmers is just such a party and a rock 'n roll show, whether it's originals or covers.
Highlight of the night would have to have been when the venue moved a table in front of the stage, encouraging Josh to get up there. And y'know, Josh breaking the table, and not missing a note as he came crashing down. Most guitarist break strings - Josh Kennedy breaks tables. And keeps playing.
Most ironic moment? When Josh had the douche that was hitting on everyone's wives/fiances ejected once it his fiance was getting harrassed - in the middle of Give Me Three Steps. "Come on, show that guy the door". Perfect timing.
Despite the all covers show, the guys did pull out Virginia, which was a crowd favorite obviously.
If I haven't said it before - Chalmers Green need to be back together permanently.

It was awesome being out in Tonto today, and a perfect day for it. A little bit hotter than we first expected, but fine for having the windows down. Weather that allows you to get out in the desert is so welcomed.
Beautiful drive out there. We stopped out at Canyon Lake, before heading on through to Apache Lake.
After a brief stop, a quick and late lunch down at the lake, we headed back, but not stopping at Tortilla Flat. In the museum I witnessed my first jackolope - which put so many things into perspective.
No shortage of opportunities for great photos. And to that end, thank god for having a sunroof. Many great shots were from sticking the camera out of it. Which meant no more windshield obstructed photos down at Fish Creek.
The drive home on the 60 was interesting when a mini monsoon blew through, with the blinding setting sun ahead of us. And of course, no shortage of ridiculous Phoenix drivers out there. Apparently there was a 63 car pile up on the 10 because of the monsoon. 63 cars sounds ridiculous? Not when you know how Phoenicians drive!
Anyways, we made it back in good time. And the most exciting news I've heard all day - the Chalmers show tonight starts at 10, not 9. Pretty great, because we need the down time.
These are the best of the best photos from today. Have I mentioned that I live here?!?

Someone clued me into the Gin Blossoms releasing an exclusive bonus track for No Chocolate Cake for pre orders on iTunes. An unprecedented move by this band, to the point that it's almost impressive. Of course, it was presented to me as an "all time low". Something that is hard to believe, that this band has any all time lows left in them. But indeed it is that - and more.
Giving the track a listen was exactly like listening to Mexicosis for the first time. The first (musically anyway) sign that Roger Clyne had absolutely lost the plot. But kinda with a bit more of a punch to the guts. Both instances should have been about the same, but despite the writing being on the wall with the Gin Blossoms, hearing Robin Wilson singing this was definitely harder to take than any part of watching the Roger DeClyne into the garbage can was.
My immediate thought was "are you serious?". The song, titled Please Don't Ask Me (obviously written by Johnson, and given the Gin Blossoms gayness treatment, to a incredibly larger extent than any of his songs have suffered in the past) may just be the worst thing I've ever heard to come out the Gin Blossoms camp, surpassing anything else on the record in this sense. And that's an impressive feat, given the likes of Don't Change For Me, I'm Ready and If You'll Be Mine. Again, are you fucking serious? But maybe that's it. Maybe they're not. It's been well established that this album is a complete joke. But y'know, what I hadn't considered until hearing this "song", is that maybe that's exactly what the album is supposed to be. An inside joke.
Let's face it, no one in this band, aside from Robin, is beyond this. And we know how bothered somebody was by Major Valenzuela Victory. What would be the ultimate "fuck you" to all of the freak shows out there? Release the worst album that you can possibly put out, and sit back and laugh at them as they all buy it, fall over themselves to praise all the specially crafted bogus songs, all oblivious to the inside joke. When you don't actually like your fans anyway, it's brilliant. And hell, if it sells just as much as a real album would sell anyway, where is the downside of it? Especially when you've frittered away all of your credibility and flushed your career down the toilet anyway.
Sure, it's a conspiracy theory, but is it really that far fetched? Truth is often stranger than fiction. An album title that really should offend the majority of your fan base, an album cover that is as offensive as it is horrible to comic proportions, a bunch of songs that the majority of which sound like they've specifically been written to be laughable, co-writing with all the players that made people turn on you in the first place (with some other worse examples thrown in this time for good measure) and particularly candy ass production. All the pieces are in place. The only missing part of the puzzle is how you get Robin Wilson on board with such an elaborate plan to fuck with things. I don't know, maybe only the perpetrator is privy to the inside joke and everyone else is merely a pawn in the game to fuck with things.
Now, maybe I'm wrong on this, and I'm fine with that. I've never been one to live by conspiracy theories, and I'm not married to this one any more than the idea that Elvis might serve me at Circle K. But there is no question either way that this album is a complete joke. And either way, the No Chocolate Cake File still stands and is heading to the same conclusion. Though I will admit, if it all is an inside joke - a last attempt to fuck with things before dissolving for good, it's has a smidge of cred. Not enough to justify marring the Gin Blossoms legacy, nor change the outcome of where I'm heading, nor my disgust. But compared to the alternative (that it isn't an inside joke), it does at least have some element of old school Gin Blossoms sneer, even if the execution of it really has absolutely none.
It might sound ridiculous - but it's not like there is much about this album that doesn't sound ridiculous.
Anyways, my disillusionment is spiraling further downwards faster than the Titanic. At this rate it's going to be hard not to close the No Chocolate Cake earlier than even I expected. God, this song is absolutely comically bad. I'd love to see the co-write credits on this song, though I think I have a fair idea where they might lay.
For most bands, this "hidden track" would be hidden in the closest, not at the end of a record where someone might actually hear it. It really should be ripped apart like a stray bird in a lions cage. But watch the kool-aid drinkers lap it up. I mean, after all these years the band has finally thrown them a bone, they get a bonus track!!! Weeeeeeee!
Have fun kiddies!

Kimber Lanning is in a category with Sherrif Joe Arpaio. Wow!
The Phoenix New Times have nominated Tempe Music Festival as the Best Music Festival - as the best of Phoenix 2010. Tempe Music Festival 2010 was...err...canceled guys! As much as TMF is my favorite in general, who is going to vote for something that didn't happen? My vote needs to go elsewhere.
And the most sad part of it. Very slim pickings for Best Local Band. Very slim. To the extent of there being no band that I've actually seen, let alone care about. It's the last category you'd figure that would be true of. Though, it's the Phoenix New Times, go figure...
Last, but not least - no Teakwoods nominations. Sure, I have a bias and ridiculous love of Teakwoods I guess, but not even Best Wings? Ouch.

Sara Says is a Tempe staple. And I love that.
This is a song that I first heard about 8 years ago. Around 2001 or 2002, a period where there hadn't been a lot of new Pistoleros songs. It was one of those songs that I was sold on with the first listen. Not only is it the perfectly crafted 3 so or minutes of pop gold, but, let's face it, any song that directly references Tempe, AZ pretty much has me as hello.
Over the years, songs come and go out of rotation. Many of which are my absolute favorites. That's life. Which is why I love that Sara Says has always been a mainstay in this town. Everyone knows how to play it, and if you're anywhere in the vicinity of Mark Zubia on any given night, you can guarantee that you're going to hear it get played. Mark has been involved in a lot of songs of the same caliber (Back To Zero, Radio and Parts Of Yesterday to name a few), all of which you get to hear periodically, but none as regularly as Sara Says.
So often the world the way in which I see it should be and the way it actually is are two very different things. This is one of those times where it isn't, and I'm pretty damn happy about that.

Tonight Jim was back with the band - the first time I've seen him since 2006. Although I actually saw him with Los Guys back then, my memory is really hazy, and as such really just think of him in the more laid back settings that I've seen. But god, did he wail! With Zubs at the helm and behind the axe, you don't need anymore to be satisfied, but with that said, hopefully this signals the the return of Jim Beach to Los Guys. It's been a while since Josh has last played with them, and the dueling guitar thing really takes things to a whole nother level.
Bachman's band was cool, and it was cool to see Iccard up there with them and have a brief chat with him afterwards.
Tramps did a ridiculously fun set, with a lot of older songs I haven't heard in a while. Their set turned into a fun, Yucca free for all, with almost everyone on stage by the end. Fun times were had by all.
There was no shortage of rain tonight, and boy, did the Yucca parking lot look like a swimming pool before we left.

Recycling Songs Is Good For The Environment

Matthew Moon: Check out my song, "Don't Change 4 Me," on the Gin Blossoms new album, "No Chocolate Cake".There you have it, anyone can cash in on the Gin Blossoms name.
This guy recorded and released the song two years - which was used and featured in promos for the Canadian Olympics. Yep, the song has already had a life two years ago, yet - the Gin Blossoms still recorded it for their album. Y'know, the one that has a whopping 10 other tracks of "their own songs". Y'know, err, such a high volume of "their own" (god, a term used lightly) tracks that it's acceptable to also include someone else's song that has already been recorded and released.
Recycling at it's...err...best.
I'm so glad to see that so many unknown artists (Matthew Moon, Susan Sandberg - who has been playing up her songs "on the Gin Blossoms record" for years) are able to cash in on and leverage off the Gin Blossoms name. Talk about just plain fucking sad.
I'm disgusted by this, and that's not even touching on how it's by far the most disgusting song on this album. More on that and my discovery of the song being included on the album at the conclusion of The Chocolate Cake File.
For now, let me say: It's time to amputate your weak ass plan.

The Shames tonight was without Jane, and with a drummer. It wasn't long before they started playing that it was further obvious in how long we've gone between seeing Shelby, so it was definitely great to rectify that.
It was a bit of a short night at Teaks (which goes to the fact that we need and should see Shelby again as soon as we can), but there were certainly some benefits to that. After tracking down Andrew to give him the recording of his acoustic set at Teakwoods that I promised him, it was time to hit the road...

If you'll be mine
Throw the rope and watch me climb

Maybe Jesse is taking the piss and everyone in the band missed the memo on it, recorded the song and put it on the record! God. No, Jesse is just that hideous of a song writer.
Just a little food for thought, and some background for where I'm going with this.
But for now, please excuse me while I throw up all over myself again.
At What Point Can You Still Be Called "A Band"?

Wilson recorded his tracks, “Wave Bye Bye,” “Go Crybaby” and “Something Real” (co-written with Tempe based singer, songwriter and producer Jamie Woolford) at his Uranus Studios in Tempe. The band joined him there to produce the mid-tempo drive tune “Goin’ To California.” Valenzuela and Wilde produced the rest at Wilde’s Pueblo Studios in Thousand Oaks—the jangling, inspirational “Don’t Change For Me,” the optimistic “I Don’t Want To Lose You Now,” the high spirited “Miss Disarray,” the heartfelt yet hard rockin’ “I’m Ready,” “Somewhere Tonight,” “If You’ll Be Mine” and the summer-y, brass-tinged “Dead Or Alive on the 405.” Typical of today’s modern recording process, lead vocal (Wilson), vocal harmony (Valenzuela) and instrumental parts were exchanged back and forth electronically—with no single session where the band was in the same studio at the same time.Firstly, for months I've been stating that Wilson's songs aren't the problem with the band today. And here's further evidence to why - they were produced by Wilson and Woolfood. At least someone in this band has the gumption to work with a producer that is worth his salt. While the rest, which sound horrible, were done by Valenzuela and his good pal Wilde. Case in point on what I can and can't stand from the new record.
What I really thing is darling about this whole thing is there was "no single session where the band was in the same studio at the same time". Welcome to the "Gin Blossoms of 2010" - where not only does the band not write songs together, but they don't even record them together. Well, that's just awesome.
I do particularly love the excuse for this too - the members don't live in the same city. The members of the band that don't live in the valley are Wilson and Valenzuela, and Wilson worked out here at Uranus for his tracks. Which leaves Valenzuela out in Los Angeles - a 45 minute flight from Phoenix.
It doesn't add up to much of an excuse, does it? I think the new found ability to "co-exist" that they've been going on about is now obvious - spend absolutely as little time together as is humanly possible. I'm sure once there is the technology is in place for it, their live show will be a huge screen with each member teleconferencing in. And if anyone's connection goes down, it'll be fine, there will be a Rembrandt on hand to fill in - teleconference style, of course!
Pardon me if I expect bands I listen to to work as - errr - y'know...a band.
It Sucks To Be Robin Wilson

Gin Blossoms Hope To Recapture Old Fans.
“We were going to make a video, but half the band decided they didn’t want to be in the video. It’s kind of silly not doing that,” Wilson said. “It was presented to me that I could make a video by myself if I wanted to and that pissed me off frankly. It’s aggravating; we might make a video that just has me or one other guy. You would think it would be simple.”There exactly is why I have no problem with Wilson - despite how people wanted me to criticize him as much as Valenzuela. Not only is he not responsible for the horrible fluff songs on the record, but here is another example in a line of many of how he wants to be in a cool rock band, and function...like a cool rock band. He was told he make a video by himself?!? And people think I'm an asshole for wanting the Gin Blossoms to break up and have Robin go off and do his own thing? Christ on a crutch.
I honestly feel sorry for the guy, being stuck in this lame ass band. Someone get him a functioning rock 'n roll band - STAT!

Really fun show. The sort of show that I wouldn't necessarily would think of going to, but st the same time, wouldn't pass up free tickets. It was a really good show, with many of costume changes, all the hits that I know (which is somewhat limited).

After a bit of a chill out, we headed back to the car, via the Ash Avenue bridge. The informational sign in front of it was gone, I don't know if that means they're close to starting work on it or not. I would like to hope that fixing the lake would take away from the bridge rehabilitation budget - but that's probably just wishful thinking.

A.K.A "Let's Get Stinko"

Given Kstie's news about Best Buy, we were set to get stinko. Not really, but certainly relative to how much we normal drink on our current budget. Which is counter productive to our scrimping after Vegas, but it's just something that needed to happen. So, I took full advantage of the Friday night specials - Four Peaks 8th Street Ale. And while I was pretty far from actually getting stinko, I did have a slight buzz going on by the end of the night. Oh how I love drink specials. Not that 8th Street Ale is my favorite beer, but I do enjoy it now and then (generally when eating at Four Peaks, and if it means that I get more bang for my back - opr beer for my buck as the case may be, bring it on.
With how shitty the last couple of days have been, the whole excitment of Strange Young Things playing at Teakwoods had kinda been lost of me. Just in that it's a sweet gig - arguably one of the best for us, but I'm not sure I was pumped as much as usual before getting there / the band playing. Of course, that all changed once they did.
Corey up first with an acoustic set. Midway through he was joined (reluctantly at first
Of course, once the full band took the stage, that's when the real fun began! The really sweet thing about Strange Young Things at Teakwoods is it's always a hell of a set, and not one of these 45 minute deals. Not to diss 45 minute sets, but with Strange Young Things, the longer the set, the better. And so you can't get better than them playing all night.
It was definitely cool that we got Take Me Out Of The City, which I've never seen the full band do. And it was cool that they pulled out Tripped, which I'm sure was again largely for us.
A really fun night, and really just what the doctor ordered. I just wish we could do this every Friday night!
And yes, we do keep our smiles in our left breast pocket. But you could hardly tell last night, in spite of everything. Thank god for Strznge Young Things!

Hearing the full song confirms what I've known about the album from the samples I've heard recent. It's a miss. No pun intended. I didn't hugely mind the song when I saw it live last year (for what it is anyway), but the album version of what is their latest single really misses the mark. The production is quite bad, and effectively sounds like an in progress demo to me more than a finished and polished mix. But I guess that's what you get when you don't have a good producer behind the product. And it would have to be one of the most uninspired guitar solos I've heard.
I've got much more to say on the entire topic as a whole. But for now, I'll just leave it at this: fuck corporate rock bands.

We also checked out their "local" section, to see how big it was, and what they had - and were pleased to find that their local section was full of Arizona artists as well as I assume Nevada ones. Although we were on a tight schedule this morning, it meant that we had to go through the whole section to make sure there was nothing we needed. There wasn't, but like I said, quite a decent selection of Phoenix bands. Definitely glad that we headed down there. That puts our Zia locations visited tally to 5 - with 3 more left to go. Next time we're here, we definitely have to hit up the other Vegas one.
We still had to get gas on the way out - which was quite a cluster fuck, and also put us back a bit on time. Once everything was said and done, we were on our way out of Vegas at about 4:45pm. An hour and 45 minutes after what we'd planned. That's Vegas for you.

It was pretty incredible how drowsy I had been at 8pm, but once out on the Strip, I had all the energy in the world and had no problem going until 2am. Once back at the hotel, we stayed up pretty much until 4am, watching a special on Criss Angel (further enhancing Katie's displeasure with him), and then Billy The Exterminator. Which was like a car wreck, as much as you know you should look away, you can't.
