Zia 30th Anniversary

What better excuse to go to Zia tonight than 30% of used CD's for their 30th Anniversary. Sweet. Picked up a couple of local discs at good prices. And surprisingly found a Jebadiah / Jimmy Eat World CD. Who would have thunk that Jimmy would have a split CD with an Aussie band?

The highlight of the night for Katie would be getting to the counter and spotting the Zia Records environmental bags. That would have to rank highly as the coolest in her collection.

Josh Kennedy, Breaking Tables All Over The Place

Last night with Chalmers Green last night too much fun. We were fashionably late, as usual, and unfortunately missed a good deal of the first set. Which was acceptable, since the band was playing all night. Iguana Macks was packed, anybody who is anybody was there. Case in point that Chalmers needs to be back together. It's just too much fun seeing Josh in 100% rock n' roll mode.

Although we knew tonight's show was going to be mostly covers, it actually surpassed our expectations. Chalmers is just such a party and a rock 'n roll show, whether it's originals or covers.

Highlight of the night would have to have been when the venue moved a table in front of the stage, encouraging Josh to get up there. And y'know, Josh breaking the table, and not missing a note as he came crashing down. Most guitarist break strings - Josh Kennedy breaks tables. And keeps playing. [smile]

Most ironic moment? When Josh had the douche that was hitting on everyone's wives/fiances ejected once it his fiance was getting harrassed - in the middle of Give Me Three Steps. "Come on, show that guy the door". Perfect timing. [lol] As a side note, we later got to see this security put this asshole to the ground when he tried to get back in.

Despite the all covers show, the guys did pull out Virginia, which was a crowd favorite obviously.

If I haven't said it before - Chalmers Green need to be back together permanently. [smile]

Stopping for gas in Apache Junction today, it was hard not to just want to move there. So nice to be out of the city. It so wouldn't work for us, but god, once since gets the teleportation thing down, AJ here we come!

It was awesome being out in Tonto today, and a perfect day for it. A little bit hotter than we first expected, but fine for having the windows down. Weather that allows you to get out in the desert is so welcomed.

Beautiful drive out there. We stopped out at Canyon Lake, before heading on through to Apache Lake.

After a brief stop, a quick and late lunch down at the lake, we headed back, but not stopping at Tortilla Flat. In the museum I witnessed my first jackolope - which put so many things into perspective. [wink]

No shortage of opportunities for great photos. And to that end, thank god for having a sunroof. Many great shots were from sticking the camera out of it. Which meant no more windshield obstructed photos down at Fish Creek.

The drive home on the 60 was interesting when a mini monsoon blew through, with the blinding setting sun ahead of us. And of course, no shortage of ridiculous Phoenix drivers out there. Apparently there was a 63 car pile up on the 10 because of the monsoon. 63 cars sounds ridiculous? Not when you know how Phoenicians drive! [wink]

Anyways, we made it back in good time. And the most exciting news I've heard all day - the Chalmers show tonight starts at 10, not 9. Pretty great, because we need the down time. [smile]

These are the best of the best photos from today. Have I mentioned that I live here?!? [smile]

Please Don't Play Me

I'm Not A Conspiracy Theorist, But...

(Add / View Comments) (12)Friday, August 27, 2010 - 05:38:30 PM
(Posted Under: The No Chocolate Cake File)
It's incredible how similar to Roger Clyne & The Peacemakers this whole Gin Blossoms turning to shit thing is. To that end, I've just had a moment that felt just like when I heard Mexicosis for the first time.

Someone clued me into the Gin Blossoms releasing an exclusive bonus track for No Chocolate Cake for pre orders on iTunes. An unprecedented move by this band, to the point that it's almost impressive. Of course, it was presented to me as an "all time low". Something that is hard to believe, that this band has any all time lows left in them. But indeed it is that - and more.

Giving the track a listen was exactly like listening to Mexicosis for the first time. The first (musically anyway) sign that Roger Clyne had absolutely lost the plot. But kinda with a bit more of a punch to the guts. Both instances should have been about the same, but despite the writing being on the wall with the Gin Blossoms, hearing Robin Wilson singing this was definitely harder to take than any part of watching the Roger DeClyne into the garbage can was.

My immediate thought was "are you serious?". The song, titled Please Don't Ask Me (obviously written by Johnson, and given the Gin Blossoms gayness treatment, to a incredibly larger extent than any of his songs have suffered in the past) may just be the worst thing I've ever heard to come out the Gin Blossoms camp, surpassing anything else on the record in this sense. And that's an impressive feat, given the likes of Don't Change For Me, I'm Ready and If You'll Be Mine. Again, are you fucking serious? But maybe that's it. Maybe they're not. It's been well established that this album is a complete joke. But y'know, what I hadn't considered until hearing this "song", is that maybe that's exactly what the album is supposed to be. An inside joke.

Let's face it, no one in this band, aside from Robin, is beyond this. And we know how bothered somebody was by Major Valenzuela Victory. What would be the ultimate "fuck you" to all of the freak shows out there? Release the worst album that you can possibly put out, and sit back and laugh at them as they all buy it, fall over themselves to praise all the specially crafted bogus songs, all oblivious to the inside joke. When you don't actually like your fans anyway, it's brilliant. And hell, if it sells just as much as a real album would sell anyway, where is the downside of it? Especially when you've frittered away all of your credibility and flushed your career down the toilet anyway.

Sure, it's a conspiracy theory, but is it really that far fetched? Truth is often stranger than fiction. An album title that really should offend the majority of your fan base, an album cover that is as offensive as it is horrible to comic proportions, a bunch of songs that the majority of which sound like they've specifically been written to be laughable, co-writing with all the players that made people turn on you in the first place (with some other worse examples thrown in this time for good measure) and particularly candy ass production. All the pieces are in place. The only missing part of the puzzle is how you get Robin Wilson on board with such an elaborate plan to fuck with things. I don't know, maybe only the perpetrator is privy to the inside joke and everyone else is merely a pawn in the game to fuck with things.

Now, maybe I'm wrong on this, and I'm fine with that. I've never been one to live by conspiracy theories, and I'm not married to this one any more than the idea that Elvis might serve me at Circle K. But there is no question either way that this album is a complete joke. And either way, the No Chocolate Cake File still stands and is heading to the same conclusion. Though I will admit, if it all is an inside joke - a last attempt to fuck with things before dissolving for good, it's has a smidge of cred. Not enough to justify marring the Gin Blossoms legacy, nor change the outcome of where I'm heading, nor my disgust. But compared to the alternative (that it isn't an inside joke), it does at least have some element of old school Gin Blossoms sneer, even if the execution of it really has absolutely none.

It might sound ridiculous - but it's not like there is much about this album that doesn't sound ridiculous.

Anyways, my disillusionment is spiraling further downwards faster than the Titanic. At this rate it's going to be hard not to close the No Chocolate Cake earlier than even I expected. God, this song is absolutely comically bad. I'd love to see the co-write credits on this song, though I think I have a fair idea where they might lay.

For most bands, this "hidden track" would be hidden in the closest, not at the end of a record where someone might actually hear it. It really should be ripped apart like a stray bird in a lions cage. But watch the kool-aid drinkers lap it up. I mean, after all these years the band has finally thrown them a bone, they get a bonus track!!! Weeeeeeee!

Have fun kiddies!

Shouts out to my peeps who I stole this blog title from. Sorry, it was just too good not to use it. [smile]

It's been a while since I've listened to Girls All The Bad Guys Want. It's clear I've been living in America for a while now, because the "a reefer and a 40 line" is no longer completely lost on me anymore. The reefer part never was, but I never understood the "40" thing though. [smile]

Anyways, another awesome day - even better than yesterday. To the point that it was okay to turn off the AC and open the windows. This is awesome Arizona weather!

Tonight it's Tramps & Thieves at Teakwoods, with plans to take advantage of the 1/2 off appetizers. Right now I'm a little more excited about that than Tramps. Oh the hunger. And hey, for once we won't be the annoying couple that "just want to see the band" on Friday night. ha!

Best Of Phoenix 2010 Nominations

Best of Phoenix 2010 is out. A few funny and sad aspects about it...

Kimber Lanning is in a category with Sherrif Joe Arpaio. Wow! [wink] For Best Superhero. Gee, I'm really going to have to think long and hard about that one!

The Phoenix New Times have nominated Tempe Music Festival as the Best Music Festival - as the best of Phoenix 2010. Tempe Music Festival 2010 was...err...canceled guys! As much as TMF is my favorite in general, who is going to vote for something that didn't happen? My vote needs to go elsewhere.

And the most sad part of it. Very slim pickings for Best Local Band. Very slim. To the extent of there being no band that I've actually seen, let alone care about. It's the last category you'd figure that would be true of. Though, it's the Phoenix New Times, go figure...

Last, but not least - no Teakwoods nominations. Sure, I have a bias and ridiculous love of Teakwoods I guess, but not even Best Wings? Ouch.

Well, they never actually went anywhere. But the combination of it being hard to get down to Phoenix by 6 and Josh & Bobby happy hour having stopped 2 months ago, means it's been long enough for me to really miss Baja Wednesdays.

But this week, happy hour music has started up with music again, now provided by Jason Longo. That's enough excuse for me to get re-acquainted with $2 Mexican imports at Teakwoods. [wink]

Sara Says

The Tempe Arizona Favorite

I couldn't help but think about this last night. Not that it's the first time. And it's probably not going to be the last.

Sara Says is a Tempe staple. And I love that.

This is a song that I first heard about 8 years ago. Around 2001 or 2002, a period where there hadn't been a lot of new Pistoleros songs. It was one of those songs that I was sold on with the first listen. Not only is it the perfectly crafted 3 so or minutes of pop gold, but, let's face it, any song that directly references Tempe, AZ pretty much has me as hello.

Over the years, songs come and go out of rotation. Many of which are my absolute favorites. That's life. Which is why I love that Sara Says has always been a mainstay in this town. Everyone knows how to play it, and if you're anywhere in the vicinity of Mark Zubia on any given night, you can guarantee that you're going to hear it get played. Mark has been involved in a lot of songs of the same caliber (Back To Zero, Radio and Parts Of Yesterday to name a few), all of which you get to hear periodically, but none as regularly as Sara Says.

So often the world the way in which I see it should be and the way it actually is are two very different things. This is one of those times where it isn't, and I'm pretty damn happy about that.

Whiskey bottle, and my last cigarette...

Los Guys don't need a second guitarist. But holy crap, it's fucking amazing when they do.

Tonight Jim was back with the band - the first time I've seen him since 2006. Although I actually saw him with Los Guys back then, my memory is really hazy, and as such really just think of him in the more laid back settings that I've seen. But god, did he wail! With Zubs at the helm and behind the axe, you don't need anymore to be satisfied, but with that said, hopefully this signals the the return of Jim Beach to Los Guys. It's been a while since Josh has last played with them, and the dueling guitar thing really takes things to a whole nother level.

Bachman's band was cool, and it was cool to see Iccard up there with them and have a brief chat with him afterwards.

Tramps did a ridiculously fun set, with a lot of older songs I haven't heard in a while. Their set turned into a fun, Yucca free for all, with almost everyone on stage by the end. Fun times were had by all.

There was no shortage of rain tonight, and boy, did the Yucca parking lot look like a swimming pool before we left.

Recycling Songs Is Good For The Environment

Thanks to a Google alert...

Matthew Moon: Check out my song, "Don't Change 4 Me," on the Gin Blossoms new album, "No Chocolate Cake".
There you have it, anyone can cash in on the Gin Blossoms name.

This guy recorded and released the song two years - which was used and featured in promos for the Canadian Olympics. Yep, the song has already had a life two years ago, yet - the Gin Blossoms still recorded it for their album. Y'know, the one that has a whopping 10 other tracks of "their own songs". Y'know, err, such a high volume of "their own" (god, a term used lightly) tracks that it's acceptable to also include someone else's song that has already been recorded and released.

Recycling at it's...err...best.

I'm so glad to see that so many unknown artists (Matthew Moon, Susan Sandberg - who has been playing up her songs "on the Gin Blossoms record" for years) are able to cash in on and leverage off the Gin Blossoms name. Talk about just plain fucking sad.

I'm disgusted by this, and that's not even touching on how it's by far the most disgusting song on this album. More on that and my discovery of the song being included on the album at the conclusion of The Chocolate Cake File.

For now, let me say: It's time to amputate your weak ass plan.

Browsing Stinkweeds and tromping around in the desert can really work up an appetite. Since we were in the Indian School area, we found ourselves at Teakwoods pretty easily. [wink]

So aside from the music, here's what I love about Teakwoods - the food is freakin' awesome. Lately I've noticed a trend with nachos at many places, presented in a gourmet like arrangement, and tasting somewhat bland. But not at Teakwoods. You're served up a mess of awesomeness. No fancy arrangement, and nothing but awesome tasting nachos.

And that's exactly the way I like it. [smile]

In what is become an increasingly popular trend, we were out of the door at Teakwoods hastily to get to a Strange Young Things show. Show time (for their set) was 12:15 - so despite chatting with Andrew and getting out of Teakwoods later than we'd expected, we were still on schedule, hitting downtown Scottsdale at 11:50pm. But, along with the usual line of traffic for parking once you get to Stetson, we could see a familar comotion set to music occuring on the stage at Martini Ranch. Fuck you Scottsdale! Much like Michigan, I'm not that sure about you. Actually, that's not really true. I'm actually pretty sure that I don't like you. [smile]

Photobox ImageAnyways, after many circles of the streets around Martini Ranch while the band played on, we managed to bag a sweet park out the front of the venue. Knowing that a good portion of the show had probably transpired, we did consider just standing outside and watching the rest of the show out there. But y;know, who the fuck are we kidding? That plan last for all of 30 seconds before we were at the door forking over our $5 to be part of the remaining fun. Thankfully the guys did an extended set, and despite missing a fair bit, we still got our money's worth. And hey, we got to see Dan play with the band, which is the first time in quite a while.

Tonight we managed to see a complete Shelby James & The Crying Shames show! Thanks to several ongoing comedy of errors, it's been several months since we've seen Shelby play. Ironically, there was no shortage of good live music going on tonight (Ghetto Cowgirl acoustic, Violet Wild - speaking of bands we haven't seen in a while!), but it didn't change the fact that we needed to stay the course. [smile]

The Shames tonight was without Jane, and with a drummer. It wasn't long before they started playing that it was further obvious in how long we've gone between seeing Shelby, so it was definitely great to rectify that.

It was a bit of a short night at Teaks (which goes to the fact that we need and should see Shelby again as soon as we can), but there were certainly some benefits to that. After tracking down Andrew to give him the recording of his acoustic set at Teakwoods that I promised him, it was time to hit the road...

One More Way Jesse Valenzuela Ruined The Band

And for the No Chocolate Cake File, filed under "How Jesse Valenzuela Ruined The Gin Blossoms", let me present you this...

I'll be yours
If you'll be mine
Throw the rope and watch me climb
Rung by rung
Into the sky
We won't fall because we can fly
Are you fucking kidding me? Seriously. I'm not sure I've ever heard a more puke worthy chorus than that. And I've heard a hell of a lot of puke worthy chorus'! I don't know what purity of crack everyone involved in this record is smoking, but it's got to be pretty high.

Maybe Jesse is taking the piss and everyone in the band missed the memo on it, recorded the song and put it on the record! God. No, Jesse is just that hideous of a song writer.

Just a little food for thought, and some background for where I'm going with this.

But for now, please excuse me while I throw up all over myself again. [lol]

At What Point Can You Still Be Called "A Band"?

(Add / View Comments) (5)Wednesday, August 18, 2010 - 02:39:18 PM
(Posted Under: The No Chocolate Cake File)
For the No Chocolate Cake file. From Amazon: Gin Blossoms Biography

Wilson recorded his tracks, “Wave Bye Bye,” “Go Crybaby” and “Something Real” (co-written with Tempe based singer, songwriter and producer Jamie Woolford) at his Uranus Studios in Tempe. The band joined him there to produce the mid-tempo drive tune “Goin’ To California.” Valenzuela and Wilde produced the rest at Wilde’s Pueblo Studios in Thousand Oaks—the jangling, inspirational “Don’t Change For Me,” the optimistic “I Don’t Want To Lose You Now,” the high spirited “Miss Disarray,” the heartfelt yet hard rockin’ “I’m Ready,” “Somewhere Tonight,” “If You’ll Be Mine” and the summer-y, brass-tinged “Dead Or Alive on the 405.” Typical of today’s modern recording process, lead vocal (Wilson), vocal harmony (Valenzuela) and instrumental parts were exchanged back and forth electronically—with no single session where the band was in the same studio at the same time.
Firstly, for months I've been stating that Wilson's songs aren't the problem with the band today. And here's further evidence to why - they were produced by Wilson and Woolfood. At least someone in this band has the gumption to work with a producer that is worth his salt. While the rest, which sound horrible, were done by Valenzuela and his good pal Wilde. Case in point on what I can and can't stand from the new record.

What I really thing is darling about this whole thing is there was "no single session where the band was in the same studio at the same time". Welcome to the "Gin Blossoms of 2010" - where not only does the band not write songs together, but they don't even record them together. Well, that's just awesome.

I do particularly love the excuse for this too - the members don't live in the same city. The members of the band that don't live in the valley are Wilson and Valenzuela, and Wilson worked out here at Uranus for his tracks. Which leaves Valenzuela out in Los Angeles - a 45 minute flight from Phoenix.

It doesn't add up to much of an excuse, does it? I think the new found ability to "co-exist" that they've been going on about is now obvious - spend absolutely as little time together as is humanly possible. I'm sure once there is the technology is in place for it, their live show will be a huge screen with each member teleconferencing in. And if anyone's connection goes down, it'll be fine, there will be a Rembrandt on hand to fill in - teleconference style, of course! [lol]

Pardon me if I expect bands I listen to to work as - errr - y'know...a band.

It Sucks To Be Robin Wilson

So, here's one of the first articles / interviews with Robin about the new album. Where he, *shock*, actually talks about the band, and the record - unlike any of the interviews with the evil puppet master talking about Miley Cyrus and any other topic that wasn't the band, that I was criticized for thinking were stupid.

Gin Blossoms Hope To Recapture Old Fans.

“We were going to make a video, but half the band decided they didn’t want to be in the video. It’s kind of silly not doing that,” Wilson said. “It was presented to me that I could make a video by myself if I wanted to and that pissed me off frankly. It’s aggravating; we might make a video that just has me or one other guy. You would think it would be simple.”
There exactly is why I have no problem with Wilson - despite how people wanted me to criticize him as much as Valenzuela. Not only is he not responsible for the horrible fluff songs on the record, but here is another example in a line of many of how he wants to be in a cool rock band, and function...like a cool rock band. He was told he make a video by himself?!? And people think I'm an asshole for wanting the Gin Blossoms to break up and have Robin go off and do his own thing? Christ on a crutch.

I honestly feel sorry for the guy, being stuck in this lame ass band. Someone get him a functioning rock 'n roll band - STAT!

The "No Chocolate Cake File"

Well, I'm official done trying to talk any sense on the Gin Blossoms board about the current state of the band. There's only so much going around in circles that even I can take.

With that said, the train wreck that is unfolding is just too good to ignore. And hence, I open the No Chocolate Cake file...

Don't feel bad for feeling like the No Chocolate Cake File about anything but how gutted I am by what the Gin Blossoms have become. It's okay, that's what the No Chocolate Cake File is. But rest assured, it's for a reason, and it is all going somewhere.

Weird Al Yankovic @ Celebrity Theatre

So tonight's plan was originally to have a ridiculous music night - Violet Wild @ Maria Maria, Corey at Starters, and then Mark & Emmett at Iguana Macks.

Those plans quickly change when Katie won tickets at work to see Weird Al tonight st the Celebrity Theatre. Pretty easy decision to change our plans, which isn't a negative reflection on anyone.

It was the first time for both of us at the Celebrity Theatre, and for seeing Weird Al. The Celebrity is a really sweet in the round venue. We hsd great seats (10 rows back), but it seems that at the Celebrity there is no such thing as a bad seat.

Really fun show. The sort of show that I wouldn't necessarily would think of going to, but st the same time, wouldn't pass up free tickets. It was a really good show, with many of costume changes, all the hits that I know (which is somewhat limited).

Let's See Music Every Night This Week - Fail

Over the weekend, we agreed that we should go out every night this week and see a band. There was some suggestion of doing that last week, which severely crashed and burned! [smile]

Tonight it was to be Shelby James at Rula Bula. By the time 9:30 rolled around, the idea of getting off the couch was far from appealing. But I stepped up to the plate, and stopped us from being lame. The funny part of the whole thing is that we got to Rula Bula, and there was no Shelby James to be seen.

I did at least threw out the milk that needed throwing out. Effectively we drove out to Mill to achieving throwing out bad milk. [lol]

The Dam Would Break

Tempe Town Pond

Photobox ImageHeaded down to Tempe Beach Park to check out Tempe Town Lake, sans the dam bursting. I guess it happened 2 weeks ago, sometime around my birthday. I hadn't thought it'd have been that bad, and was surprised with all the talk about it. Until I saw it today - wow, pretty much from Tempe Beach Park all the way east, the river bed is dry. And hence, it looks like a monumental fuck up.

With the lake emptied - and don't get me wrong, I like Tempe Town Lake, it does make you think how stupid it is to dam a natural river to make a lake - in a desert city!

Photobox ImageAs it was a really nice day, we walked all the way down to the west dam (the one that broke), and checked out the Arts Center, which was cool since we haven't been done there before. As much as it was a "nice day" in comparison to what it's been, we were pretty damn hot (and getting somewhat burnt) by the time we made it down to the Arts Center.

After a bit of a chill out, we headed back to the car, via the Ash Avenue bridge. The informational sign in front of it was gone, I don't know if that means they're close to starting work on it or not. I would like to hope that fixing the lake would take away from the bridge rehabilitation budget - but that's probably just wishful thinking.

After taking care of business at Best Buy, we headed down to World Market to redeem my birthday coupon for some Vegemite. There was much rejoicing throughout the lands when we founded boxes of Savory Shapes on the shelves there! For $2.99 a box, which isn't bad, all things considered!

Things are coming up Millhouse!

Sitting in the laundry room ATM, waiting for it to finish. Love that it is so close to our apartment. The one downside is that the wireless only just doesn't make it down here.

Strange Young Things @ Teakwoods

A.K.A "Let's Get Stinko"

(Add / View Comments) (0)Saturday, August 7, 2010 - 01:17:42 PM
(Posted Under: Tempe Music Scene Tempe Music Scene, Music Music, Live Shows)
Fun night last night with Strange Young Things at Teakwoods. It's actually seems like it's been a while since we've been to Teaks. Really just because we weren't here last weekend, but even so, it felt like being home again.

Given Kstie's news about Best Buy, we were set to get stinko. Not really, but certainly relative to how much we normal drink on our current budget. Which is counter productive to our scrimping after Vegas, but it's just something that needed to happen. So, I took full advantage of the Friday night specials - Four Peaks 8th Street Ale. And while I was pretty far from actually getting stinko, I did have a slight buzz going on by the end of the night. Oh how I love drink specials. Not that 8th Street Ale is my favorite beer, but I do enjoy it now and then (generally when eating at Four Peaks, and if it means that I get more bang for my back - opr beer for my buck as the case may be, bring it on.

With how shitty the last couple of days have been, the whole excitment of Strange Young Things playing at Teakwoods had kinda been lost of me. Just in that it's a sweet gig - arguably one of the best for us, but I'm not sure I was pumped as much as usual before getting there / the band playing. Of course, that all changed once they did.

Corey up first with an acoustic set. Midway through he was joined (reluctantly at first [wink] ) by Adam and Pat for Bitch Has Got Problems. The guys also joined in later on on She Talks To Angels, including Rich.

Of course, once the full band took the stage, that's when the real fun began! The really sweet thing about Strange Young Things at Teakwoods is it's always a hell of a set, and not one of these 45 minute deals. Not to diss 45 minute sets, but with Strange Young Things, the longer the set, the better. And so you can't get better than them playing all night.

It was definitely cool that we got Take Me Out Of The City, which I've never seen the full band do. And it was cool that they pulled out Tripped, which I'm sure was again largely for us. [smile]

A really fun night, and really just what the doctor ordered. I just wish we could do this every Friday night! [smile]

And yes, we do keep our smiles in our left breast pocket. But you could hardly tell last night, in spite of everything. Thank god for Strznge Young Things!

Miss Disarray

Gin Blossoms New 'Miss' Single

I couldn't help myself, I listened to Miss Disarray today, which is the first full song other than Go Baby Cry that I've heard off the forthcoming Gin Blossoms album.

Hearing the full song confirms what I've known about the album from the samples I've heard recent. It's a miss. No pun intended. I didn't hugely mind the song when I saw it live last year (for what it is anyway), but the album version of what is their latest single really misses the mark. The production is quite bad, and effectively sounds like an in progress demo to me more than a finished and polished mix. But I guess that's what you get when you don't have a good producer behind the product. And it would have to be one of the most uninspired guitar solos I've heard.

I've got much more to say on the entire topic as a whole. But for now, I'll just leave it at this: fuck corporate rock bands.

I'd like to stay that we're standing on the edge of the Hoover Dam - but rather we're sitting in a huge line of traffic, trying to get to the Hoover Dam. Thanks of course thanks to anti terrorism measures.

I'm all for national security, but this whole security check at the Hoover Dam is a major drag! Especially given how we didn't get out a Vegas close to as early as we wanted.

The Vegas Weekend Continues

Freemount Street, Zia Records, Hard Rock Cafe

(Add / View Comments) (0)PhotosSunday, August 1, 2010 - 04:11:25 PM
(Posted Under: Travel)
Photobox ImageAmazingly, given that I'd only gotten 4 hours sleep, I woke up a little after 9 this morning. Which was actually fantastic, given how much we wanted to fit in before having to leave this afternoon.

Photobox ImageSo we got ready, checked out of the hotel, and headed to downtown Las Vegas to check it out. It's something I hadn't seen before, and so Katie was excited to take me down there. We parked at one of the casinos down there. Walking through to get onto Freemont Street, the difference from the Strip casinos was quite noticeable. And Katie pointed out the "old person" smell of he particular one we went through. We spent an hour or so down there, and it was cool checking out the older part of Vegas.

Photobox ImageFrom there, we fired up Buller, and set out to hit up one of the Vegas Zia Records locations. Unfortunately both were kinda out of the way, but in reality, it didn't take long to get to the one on Sahara. Pretty cool store, and their vinyl section seemed to be laid out a lot better than all the other locations we've been to thus far. Plus they had a cool self promotion sign as "The Last Real Record Store" back there.

We also checked out their "local" section, to see how big it was, and what they had - and were pleased to find that their local section was full of Arizona artists as well as I assume Nevada ones. Although we were on a tight schedule this morning, it meant that we had to go through the whole section to make sure there was nothing we needed. There wasn't, but like I said, quite a decent selection of Phoenix bands. Definitely glad that we headed down there. That puts our Zia locations visited tally to 5 - with 3 more left to go. Next time we're here, we definitely have to hit up the other Vegas one.

Photobox ImageOur plan after Zia's was to head back to the Strip and wait to here from Chris. Not long after leaving we did, and made plans for lunch. While we waited for him to get ready, we decided to cruise the entire length of the Strip, as I'd never been all the way south. That turned into a bit of a thing when we ended up in the airport. [smile] But once we got that sorted out, we got back to the Strip for our cruise. Along the way we spotted a Hard Rock Cafe location that we didn't know about. Our plan was to go to the one at the Hard Rock Hotel for lunch, but we quickly changed our plans given this discovery!

Photobox ImageOnce we hit the Bellagio, we parked, and right after doing so got a buzz from Chris. Awesome timing. So we picked him up, and headed down to the MGM to park. Going through the MGM was something we wanted to get done today, so it worked out pretty conveniently. Although our pace going through there was quick, we got to stop for the lion exibit which was main thing I wanted to do there. It also seemed like the first time Chris had more or less been outside of the Bellagio, so it was good to be responsible for him seeing a bit more of Vegas.

Photobox ImageLunch at the Hard Rock was cool, though time was slipping away pretty fast by this stage. So we didn't really get a chance to look around that much, and didn't have time to look at the memorabilia collection on the third floor at all. Getting nachos, and the time it takes to make your way through a massive plate of nachos really didn't help our shortening time window. We'd planned to leave Vegas at 3 and worse case scenario at 4 if we wanted to fit something else in, so when it turned 4 by the end eating it was a little stressful. A VERY quick browse through the store, a photo and final smoke with Chris, and we were on our way back to the car at the MGM.

We still had to get gas on the way out - which was quite a cluster fuck, and also put us back a bit on time. Once everything was said and done, we were on our way out of Vegas at about 4:45pm. An hour and 45 minutes after what we'd planned. That's Vegas for you. [smile]

Circus Circus

(Posted Under: Travel)
So, it back on to the strip and down to Circus Circus. Pulling into the front of the casino, the foyer lights were blinding - a sight that Katie said she thinks heaven is like. [smile] ha.

Photobox ImageWe pulled around to the parking garage and went in. On the way through I saw a Zoltaire machine. Probably not a big deal to most, but for this Aussie it was a cool thing to see. I did question whether it could help the vertical challenged issues of Friday. Katie reckoned it would just to me into Tom Hanks. [smile] We went past the Adventuredome, which unfortunately for Katie had just closed probably 15 minutes earlier. She was pretty excited by that. I particularly liked the slot machines on the rotating platform / merry go round. But more on that later.

Upstairs we checked out the midway, which really makes Circus Circus the casino for Katie! [wink] We had a good time checking it out, and the majority of our 'gambling' went to a claw game where I was trying to win her a Las Vegas bear. I think we lost about $2 there. Went back down for a smoke, and got some change - I was on a mission to get one of those bears, but by the time we got back, the midway was closed, which was a shame, but maybe it was for the best. [wink] Anyways, the idea is probably good for families - load the kids up with quarters and send them upstairs while you gamble. It's kinda brilliant actually.

Photobox ImageSo it was getting late, so we headed back down to the casino. Katie thought we should gamble at Circus Circus, to say that we had. I was strong in my convictions to do so on the rotating platform, so it was agreed. All in all we lost 96 cents. Which turned out to be the entire amount we lost gambling the whole weekend! [smile] Once it came to leaving, it was hard to resist the desire to 'fall' and crawl off the rotating platform Hunter S. Thompson style. [wink] Though I didn't. [smile]

It was back out to the car, and back to the hotel. Made it back at about 2am, which was way later than we'd expected to stay out. That's Vegas for you. It was pretty incredible how drowsy I had been at 8pm, but once out on the Strip, I had all the energy in the world and had no problem going until 2am. Once back at the hotel, we stayed up pretty much until 4am, watching a special on Criss Angel (further enhancing Katie's displeasure with him), and then Billy The Exterminator. Which was like a car wreck, as much as you know you should look away, you can't. [smile] Earlier, Mythbusters made me miss cable, but shows like Billy The Exterminator confirm why I don't understand why anyone pays for it! [wink]
