Drinking At Noon / The Vegas Strip
(0)Saturday, July 31, 2010 - 11:51:25 pm
(Posted Under: Travel)
Woke up at about 10:30 and played some phone tag with Chris.
Pretty cool meeting up with Chris. After a smoke, we retired to a bar inside the Bellagio foyer at about midday and started drinking and chatting. And continued to do as such for next four an a half hours. Chris' dedication to trying as many beers as possible while over here is nothing short of impressive. Clearly I'm a bit out of practice, not having a hope of keeping up with him.
We both retired back to our rooms around 4:30, to meet up later for dinner. Part of me wanting to hit the strip, as Katie and I had a lot we wanted to do this weekend, but the last 4 and a half hours of drinking had us both a bit tired. So we decided to go back to the hotel for a bit. And hence had a relaxing 3 hours watching Mythbusters episodes in bed. At about 8, we decided that we needed to get out and do something. Which I was completely behind, but also felt lethargic as hell. So, we headed back out, parked at the Bellagio again, and decided to take a walk around hearing from Chris.
We ended up walking down to a McDonalds and Panda express that Katie had mentioned on the way in - her memory of it was that it was in L.A, and I had no memory of it at all. However, early today we noticed it on the strip. So we decided to walk down there to see if it triggered my memory at all. On getting down there, I had absolutely no recollection of it. Which just goes to how I was as sick as hell the last 2 days in Vegas last time - which was admittedly also 5 years ago. But we had a great time walking down that side of the strip. Ducking in an out of the casinos down there was cool, and I liked that we were doing something different - although, according to Katie, a lot of them we HAD been past or in - again, completely no recollection on my part.
Around 9 I spoke to Chris - as it turned out, I was not getting any of his text messages, and they were about to order food. Given how long it'd take us to get back to the Bellagio, it wasn't practical to try make dinner. An unfortunate turn of events, no doubt thanks to problems with international phone carriers. In any case, we headed back down the strip to find a place to eat. Sammy Haggar's Cabo Wabo Catina was on the cards, but we ended up going for a Hawaiian themed cheese burger place instead, because neither of us actually felt like Mexican tonight. Air conditioning, food, drink at sitting was pretty damn awesome, I must say - especially at 10:30 at night.
From there, we headed back out to the strip, and were considering going back to the hotel - after all, we wanted to get up early to get a bunch of stuff done tomorrow - but decided that we wanted to go check out Circus Circus, which neither of us have done before. so, it was back over to the Bellagio (seeing that hourly fountain show for the third time tonight in the process) to get the car.

...And We're Here!

And we're here, in Vegas. Driving in to the Strip at night is pretty amazing. It's pretty amazing during the day too actually, but. Y'know, there is just something really exciting about Vegas. After driving 5 hours and being tired, the sight just makes you want to party! We're not going to, but that's the sort of power Vegas has.
The location of our hotel is awesome! We knew it was close to the Hard Rock Hotel, but I didn't realize just how close! It's like old times! The room is pretty sweet for what we paid, and the location is amazing! Just over a mile from the Strip.
A nice thing right now is limited cable TV, and The Soup. There isn't that much I miss about cable, but The Soup is absolutely one of those things.
Looking at the in room magazines, a big ad for The Gun Store has caught our attention. I want to go and shoot a sub machine gun tomorrow! ha. No, seriously, I could! "Disneyland for adults" according to the ad. Ahhh, Vegas!

The Lights Of Vegas

Wow, driving over the hill just outside of Henderson at night is something. Everything is reasonably dark, then is a huge sea of lights of Henderson and Las Vegas beyond.
It's the first time I've driven into Vegas at night, and it's really a sight to behold.

The Open Road

Just drove through Wickenburg, which looked like a pretty cool place, though a pretty much a ghost town at 8pm.
It's about 8:30 now, and it's impressive how pitch black it is behind us, but there is still some light across the horizon in front of us (to the north west).
Anyways, it's our first road trip outside of moving the Arizona in quite a while. Not that moving to Arizona itself wasn't technically a long while ago at this point. It's pretty nice to be out on the open road. And it's the first time I've really gotten to road trip with the netbook - which I must say is pretty sweet. While I like the Dell for any grunt work, but for blogging on the road, the netbook is a hell of a lot more comfortable than my lug of a laptop.

Driving west towards Vegas just out of Surprise, with a huge storm off to the right and the most amazing sunset that we're driving towards, of course with the saguaro silhouette lining the road, it's hard not to be in complete awe of this desert of ours. We surely do live in the most beautiful place on earth.

Wow. Okay, it's probably not worthy of quoting Plymouth Manor actually, but I'm surprised that it's so nice out today. Y'know, when you're living in Phoenix in the summer, around 30 degrees is nice!
May just turn off the AC. Fancy that!

Strange Young Things @ Compound Grill

Early shows are nice for getting to go to bed at a reasonable time, but the downside of them is that they're often hard to get to on top - especially when they're virtually in another state! Okay, so that's a bit of an overstatement, but going to the Compound Grill in North Phoenix is one hell of a trek. But we really wanted to see Strange Young Things down there tonight, with visions of Corey climbing over all the tables, throwing salt shakers etc.
Amazingly despite the comedy of errors on the 60, we got there only about 25 minutes late. We really expected to be the only people from T-Town there, so it was cool to see Norman there when we rocked up. If anyone likes these guys as much as us, it's him I guess! So we had a Tempe table going on amongst the normals, which we were expecting to be freaked out.
Fun show with Rich sitting in on drums. It was a bunch of covers when we showed up, which soon turned into originals. I'm not saying that it was because of that, but it we were happy about it either way. Two notible covers pulled out were Cocaine Blues and Maggie May (which went off much smoother than St. Patricks Day, and sounded really cool).
The one thing that sucks about showing up late is missing Bang The Dash - so it worked out nicely that they closed with that rather than opened with it. Man, talk about the epitome of a rock 'n roll anthem.

Brian Blush Joins The Peacemakers On Stage
(0)Wednesday, July 28, 2010 - 10:21:54 am
(Posted Under: Tempe Music Scene, Music)
Well, it takes a fair bit for me to take any interest whatsoever in the Peacemakers these days. (And after doing a bit of research on the news, I was just given more proof of why. Heaven On A Paper Plate? Fuck, that's getting seriously ridiculous, even for Clyne!) But y'know, news that Brian Blush joined the band on stage last night is enough to spark some momentary interest, no matter how over The Peacemakers you are.
Admittedly I originally thought either I'd read it wrong because I hadn't fully woken up, or that it was someone trying to be funny/clever. Which happens from time to time, and is always lame. But no, the event, as reported by the Music Matters Project (at least that's what clued me in on Facebook this morning) really fucking happened. As hard as it is to believe, there is audio and video proof of it.
The shame of the event is that it was certainly not Blush's finest performance. Which I guess happens when you've been out of a band for 12 years. Though, there was clearly more to this than be unrehearsed. Being such an unfathomable occurrence, it's a shame that it wasn't more technically together. But either way, fucked if I (or anyone else) ever expected this to happen. It really took a while to come to terms with it not being a hoax.
Not that it changes my stance on, or makes me more interested in the band, but all the same, noteworthy and just another thing of late that left me thinking I was living in bizarro world.
Of course, if in 3 months time I learn that Brian is joining the Peacemakers or something, it'll be clear that it was actually a desperate attempt by Roger to regenerate interest in his once great band that he has successfully completely run into the ground.
Cynical much? Hell yeah.

Watched Never Been Thawed last night, after picking it up at Zia on Saturday. I guess I'm behind the 8 ball on it, given that it was no longer showing once I was out here in 2005.
Really enjoyable, and in no small way to the familiar locations and cavalcade of stars - y'know, Scotty Howard, Emmett DeGueva, Corey Gloden. We had no idea Glodie was in it (as Katie saw it long before having any knowledge of him) - but god, we'd recognize that strut anywhere.

Huge day - planned to sleep in, but woke up early with a call from Christos.
The rest of the day had a theme - of being late. Hit up Zia's, found a copy of Never Been Thawed. Spent a little longer there than expected. Got to Toy Story 3 a little late, but thankfully didn't miss anything.
From there stopped off at home for a little bit - then headed out to Fuddruckers for my free birthday meal. Got out of there a little late, headed for Teakwoods. Missed the start of Steve's set, so I decided not to bother recording. Definitely a lot of fun seeing Larson at Teakwoods, he should play there more!
From there it was over to Yucca for Strange Young Things, which was the one thing today we made it in plenty of time for.
What a day...

Happy Birthday To Me
Violet Wild & The Black Moods @ Yucca Tap
(0)Tuesday, July 20, 2010 - 11:37:15 pm
(Posted Under: Tempe Music Scene, )
With my birthday tomorrow, and not much going on musically, it worked out pretty sweet that Violet Wild on short notice were playing the Yucca Tap tonight - which turned out to coincide with Ryan's birthday.
Violet Wild did a fun first set. Not surprisingly, given Ryan's birthday, were the Black Moods. I pretty much was confident of this happening the moment I heard it was Ryan's birthday. And it didn't surprise me when Kevin was there. However, I didn't necessarily expect that it was going to be the Black Moods with Kevin singing. There's a birthday treat that the whole world can enjoy! Some old school Black Moods - of course, with Rich on drums instead of Chico. As the night turned to am, the Moods were still up there, so I rang in my 33nd year watch The Black Moods with Kevin Prier singing - pretty sweet!
So many people that we saw on Saturday - PC, Andrew, Corey... Had a chat to Andrew who wished me a happy birthday. Found out HIS age tonight, which I had been wondering about - and it made me feel old. He and PC got up after The Moods for two songs, with Josh sitting in on drums.
The night was closed out with another fun set from Violet Wild. Corey got up for Anything That's Rock N' Roll, which was actually the second time tonight it got played. Actually, the amount of Tom Petty in general was impressive.
Fun times at the Yucca Tap. We really shouldn't have stayed out so late on a school night, especially since we have to get up at 6 tomorrow for breakfast, but it was worth it.

After a bit of a cleanup, Katie suggested that we go out for ice-cream. And I doubt she expected me to actually agree with it.
So after taking the trash out, we drove down to Baskin Robins, which was a cool reminder of when we did that in 2006. Although, this time around, it was WAY too hot to sit outside on the grass!
On the way back we stopped off and took a look at a house Katie had seen for sale recently.
The funny part of the whole thing is that we just heard that today is - yes, you guessed it - National Ice-Cream Day! Go us for taking part in the celebrations!

- Sweat while inside
- Get bumped by people going to the bar
- Move every 2 minutes for people that clearly should just find a seat at the bar
- Worry about riff raff and their slam dancing
- Deal with bad sound
- Feel like a whore

So I guess the check point only set us back half an hour. Coming in on Friday night at 11pm was a lot quicker. I guess it's just weird having been through here in 2005, post 9/11 and there not being any check point.
We got to see the under construction bypass in daylight. While it didn't look as eerie as it did on Friday night, it still looked just as freakin' big! It's ridiculously massive (the photos don't really capture just how big), and I can't imagine what it'd be like to drive over.
It would have been nice to have stopped and gotten out at the Hoover Dam, but there is no way we have time for that this afternoon, so it's full speed ahead to Phoenix!

Illegal Selling Of Live Recording

It's been a while since illegal selling of bootlegs has come up and gotten under my skin. But today, it was brought to my attention that the following is being sold:
RockinCD - Robin Wilson USA Phoenix AZ Teakwoods Bar and Grille 2010-02-20
I didn't record it, but I know who did, and contributed photography for the artwork.
Do not purchase this recording.. It was shared by the recorder in the spirit of live recordings, free. The way it should be. It's available, for free, as it was meant to be here: http://www.gbfan.net/viewtopic.php?f=15&t=208.
And just to help with Google hits - let me repeat. Do not buy the Robin Wilson USA Phoenix AZ Teakwoods Bar and Grille 2010-02-20 CD from RockinCD. Gin Blosoms. Live Recording. Robin Wilson. Teakwoods. Keywords, keywords, keywords.
People selling live recordings are the scum of the earth. Which is why my recordings remain for my ears only, unless I really trust you.

910 Live Closing?
(0)Sunday, July 11, 2010 - 02:12:36 pm
(Posted Under: Tempe Music Scene)
While I haven't seen any official announcement yet, the moving of next weeks Let Go/Ghetto Cowgirl/Domo/Tramps show to Long Wongs, followed immediately by The Black Moods announcing the cancellation of their August gig, it looks like 910 Live is probably closing after only 5 months.
Maybe I'm jumping to conclusions, but I can't say it's a good sign.
Either way, next week's show being moved causes a huge dilemma when it comes to our Long Wongs boycott.
Update: Okay, so I doubt it's closing, but it's unlikely that shows we're going to want to see are going to be booked there anymore.

Los Guys @ Teakwoods / Strange Young Things @ Yucca
(0)Saturday, July 10, 2010 - 11:21:35 pm
(Posted Under: Tempe Music Scene, Music, Live Shows)
We decided to head out to Teaks tonight for Future Band and Los Guys. It was a hard decision, since we needed to be back in Tempe for Strange Young Things at 12:30. Though, once we got there, we were really glad that we did make the trip out there, even though we missed Future Band, and had to wait a while for Los Guys to start. A couple of cool rarities were thrown into the set, like Hotel Defeated. And when Mark was looking for requests, I was able to get Tequila and Marijuana in there. Damn it that's an awesome song!
It was amusing to me when Andrew said his goodbyes at midnight, headed for Yucca. Pre-empting exactly what we were going to do 10 minutes later. Much like the last time we did this (Teakwoods, and then Strange Young Things @ Yucca) we timed it perfectly! The show rocked, and I think as a result tonight, my assessment has gone from "my favorite young local band" to "my favorite band, period". Let's be honest, it's true. Fuck corporate rock bands. Something else confirmed tonight was how much I love the new tunes, to the point that I'd actually rather hear the new ones over the old ones.
For the third time in the row, I was left feeling like it was the best gig to date. As always, loved watching Dan the mad man behind the kit, and tonight Pat's guitar tone was dialed in perfectly! It was just a great set. And it was cool when the guy from Banana Gun jumped up for Suitcase. Virtually so that Corey could run out for a smoke. But it was pretty rock n' roll. The only downside of the whole night was that the sound guy turned off the mic when Andrew jumped up on stage for American Girl. Not sure what the deal with that sound guy is, but for us, that's at least he's third strike.
Towards the end, we had a repeat of the last Yucca show - Corey jumping off stage, zeroing in on Katie to hold the mic and everyone sitting on Yucca's floor. Which can only mean one thing - The Bitch Has Got Problems. We'd been singing that damn song all day , and of course, after this, we were singing it again hours later.
All in all, ridiculous fun with the coolest fucking rock n' roll band there is.

Well, I'm not, but Josh is. This is a cool ass video.
The video explains what the hell the point of the "steering wheel" device on Chadwick's camera is for. If you watch closely at around 1:13 you can actually see Katie and I discussing just that.

Is it overkill to see Glodie on Friday night, and then Strange Young Things on Saturday night? Do I care whether it is? Hell no.
Weekend is definitely looking up with the addition of Strange Young Things at Yucca. Withdrawals were starting to sink in.

DR-07 Follow Up

So I've had a chance to have a good listen to the Josh & Bobby recording from Saturday, and I must say that the quality is really awesome.
It was an acoustic gig, so it'll be interesting to see how it holds up in an electric full band setting, but certainly from today I'm really happy. And listening to the recording does confirm that the DR-100 probably would have been overkill.

Fourth Of July Part - 2
Fabulous Phoenix Fourth
(0)Sunday, July 4, 2010 - 11:48:45 pm
(Posted Under: No Category)
After Iguana Macks we headed to Fuddruckers for dinner. Which wasn't really planned, but Katie had the idea while we were watching the guys play, which sounded like a fantastic day - it was fourth of July after all, what could be more patriotic for us than eating at Fudds?
So we headed down to the one on Priest, and ate pretty quickly to head back, as we had plans to go down to see the Phoenix fireworks - where both Shelby and Los Guys were scheduled to play. Our plan was to take the light rail down, so that we didn't have to worry about parking. Additionally it meant that we could ride the light rail, which was haven't done the whole time since living here.
It was definitely something, effectively riding a tram again. Something we used to do every day, but haven't in over a year. Since we were having so much fun at Iguana Macks, we were running a bit late, because we'd actually planned to leave before the end of Josh & Bobby's set. And the light rail took longer than we expected to get to downtown Phoenix. All the same, we were both glad that we stuck with our plan.
By the time we got to Steele Indian School Park it was close to 7:45pm, and hence likely that we'd missed most if not all of Shelby's set. By the time we did get to the lake stage, we caught the end of Starting To Hurt and one of Amos' songs before the ended. We had doubts about Los Guys playing, since Katie had noticed that Zub's dates said they were playing in Prescott at 9. Unfortunately for us, our thoughts surrounding that were confirmed. So instead we took the opportunity to take a look around the park at the festivities that were going on. There was certainly no shortage of people there.
Definitely a highlight of the whole thing was the "mister" area, which was basically a huge back hoe, with a nozzle connected to it spraying water. I'm not sure I would have called it a mister as much as I would have called it a giant fire hose! Of course, it seemed like it'd be nice to cool off, but as we made our way around to it, it became obvious just how much water it was spraying, by the massive mud pool around it all the way down to the lake. Interestingly, especially after night fell, with the spot lights behind it, and kids screaming (but running towards it, not away from it), it looked a hell of a lot like a scene out of Terminator. I can certainly say that I've lived in two severally drought affected places, and the differences in how that is treated is pretty remarkable.
In any case, as it got closer to the time for the fireworks, we found a quite place by the lake and waited. Which was a good opportunity to take some photos across the lake. The fireworks themselves were quite impressive and definitely worth the trip down there, lasting for at least half an hour. The first two songs played during the fireworks were Beautiful Day (U2) and...well, some Coldplay song. I can't be expected to know one Coldplay song from another. The point being, could they have chosen two songs slightly more American for 4th of July than one from an Irish band, and one from a British band?!? It was kinda amazing to me! But I digress. The fireworks were great, and despite not taking my tripod as I didn't think I was going to bother with photos, I ended up getting some cool shots!
All in all it was a fine night, despite missing Shelby. Which was finished up with a light rail ride back to Tempe. Which was kinda less fun and novel than on the one down, and I'd be lying if I said that I didn't partially wish that we had the car when we were leaving. But of course, we didn't have to worry about drunk drivers.

Fourth Of July - Part 1
Josh & Bobby @ Iguana Macks
(0)Sunday, July 4, 2010 - 05:16:54 pm
(Posted Under: Tempe Music Scene, Music)
The celebrations for this 4th of July, my second one in the States, more or less started with seeing Josh & Bobby at Iguana Macks. Largely influenced by my DR-07 purchase yesterday and wanting to give it a try out. Not that it isn't conceivable that we wouldn't gone to see the guys play anyway.
Getting to Iguana Macks was equally dubious in the middle of the day as it is at night. Our saving grace being that I had the address on my iPod. We were kinda late as it was, god knows how much later we would have been if I hadn't thought to check my iPod calendar for the address!
What followed was an awesome two hours. The weather today was awesome. Cooler than it's been lately, around 93, with a nice breeze. It was a perfect day to be outside on the patio watching the guys do their acoustic thing, with a cold Corona in hand! We were greeted when we walked in by Bobby asking us if we had any illegal fireworks - mid song. We actually showed up two songs before the first set break, and when they came over to shoot the shit, I cleared recording with them, which they had no problem with.
Really fun afternoon, can't think of better way to have spent it actually.

The DR-07 And The Three Legged Table
(0)Saturday, July 3, 2010 - 11:06:55 pm
(Posted Under: No Category)
Well, it's been quite a day.
Woke up about 10, and while the idea of lounging around was incredible nice, we didn't screw around in getting out to Guitar Center for the Fourth Of July sale - particularly because they had the Tascam DR-07 listed as a sale item, but without a marked price.
I'd looked at these months ago, really wanting to get a digital recorder, particularly being interested in the pricey DR-100, although the DR-07 had been recommended to me from a local taper. All this time I've managed to hold off - but we weren't going to let this opportunity pass. Before we left, we both mentioned how it'd be sweet, and a no brainer if it was $100. Which seemed like a pipe dream somewhat, given I've seen it between $179 and $279 (the list price) when doing some research on it.
So, you couldn't stop me from rushing to the counter when we walked in and there was a sign inside the store for it, for $99! S-w-e-e-t! So there was no need to toss up whether we could / should get it. Waiting and not having just brought it on a whim months ago certainly has paid off.
From there we stopped by Albertson's to stock up some cheap potato chips, did some backing, then hit up the Pride on McClintock for gas, and a free soda. Those free sodas rock, especially in this heat.
It was then back home, where we did a massive, and impressive cleanup. Followed by an attempt to fix the Ikea table that has been standing on three legs since we first put it together, god knows how many months ago. Katie had discovered a method of using match sticks to fix combat against stripped threads in wood furniture. What followed was a valiant 3 or so hour effort to get the thing fixed. With some failed attempts, we put some popsicle sticks into the mix, which really made a difference, but at the end of the day, it was effectively a fruitless venture, thanks to the hollow design of the Lack tables. It was a fairly entertaining 3 hours though.
Of course, we're not ones to admit defeat. Once we determined that there was no way we were going to fix it with ingenuity, it was time to switch tack - to brute force. With a tube of super glue. Within 30 seconds our 3 legged Lack table woes were solved. While it would have been cool to have gotten it fixed by creating our own screw thread, the end result of having the table fixed, even with super glue was just as rewarding.
Once all was said and done, it was about 10pm. And really felt like we'd been going since the moment we got up. Which is pretty much because we had. But with that, it was kinda a relaxing Saturday despite the fact we were on the go all day.
